Volkswagen Group, also called Volkswagen AG, major German automobile manufacturer, founded by the German government in 1937 to mass-produce a low-priced “people’s car.” Headquarters are in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Its name is derived from the German-language terms Volk and Wagen, translating to "people's car" when combined.

VW operates plants worldwide; it also owns other worldwide famous auto brands, including Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley as well.

History

Volkswagen was established in 1937 by the German Labor Front in Berlin.

VW logo during the 1930s, initials surrounded by a stylised cogwheel and a spinning propeller that looked like a Hakenkreuz (Hooked Cross).

Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler became involved, ordering the production of a basic vehicle capable of transporting two adults and three children at 100 km/h (62 mph). He wanted a car air cooled and in the price range for every German family would be able to afford.

Ferdinand Porsche design recognised In 1934 the Nazi government in Germany created a project with the aim of producing an affordable, reliable car for the people of Germany.

Many engeeners inventor and designer present their own Design and project one of them Ferdinand Porsche, a well-known designer for high-end vehicles and race cars, had been trying for years to get a manufacturer interested in a small car suitable for a family. He built a car named the "Volksauto" from the ground up in 1933, using many popular ideas and several of his own, putting together a car with an air-cooled rear engine, torsion bar suspension, and a "beetle" shape, the front bonnet rounded for better aerodynamics (necessary as it had a small engine).

Thus, Hitler chose to sponsor an all-new, state-owned factory using Ferdinand Porsche's design (with some of Hitler's design suggestions, including an air-cooled engine so nothing could freeze) that's why this design was preferable on others.

VW in world war II and after  war

The company was originally operated by the German Labour Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront), a Nazi organization. The Austrian automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche, who was responsible for the original design of the car, was hired by the German Labour Front in 1934, and ground was broken after three years 1937 for a new factory in the state of Lower Saxony.

The next year in 1938 the name changed to Volkswagenwerk GmbH and their main plant in Wolfsburg.

Before the company could really move forward, world war II broke out in 1939 and the people’s car was put on hold and instead the focus was on the war efforts, producing vehicles for the military.

Volkwagen’s military involvement made its factory a target for Allied bombers, and by the end of the war the factory was in ruins. It was rebuilt under British supervision, and mass production of the Volkswagen began in 1946. Control of the company was transferred again in 1949 to the West German government and the state of Lower Saxony. By that time, more than half of the passenger cars produced in the country were Volkswagens.

Volkswagen production expanded rapidly in the 1950s. The company introduced the Transporter van in 1950 and the Karmann Ghia coupe in 1955. Sales abroad were generally strong in most countries of export, but, because of the car’s small size, unusual rounded appearance, and historical connection to Nazi Germany, sales in the United States were initially sluggish. The car began to gain acceptance there as the 1950s progressed, however, and Volkswagen of America was established in 1955.

Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength. They’ve built factories and plants and opened dealerships around the world.

In 1960 the business name was changed to Volkswagenwerk AG, and since then has also been known internationally as the Volkswagen Group.

As well as developing the VW brand the company expended and currently owns several other brands as well, including Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, SEAT, Å KODA, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania and MAN.

The largest car company in the world is Volkswagen AG, with a revenue of $295,819.8 million in 2022.

The Evolution of Volkswagen

We’ve taken a look through all the VW models from the very beginning to today’s cars and picked out our top few below.

VW beetle 1938 to 2018

VW beetle 1938 to 2018

Erwin Komenda, the longstanding Auto Union chief designer, part of Ferdinand Porsche's hand-picked team, developed the car body of the prototype, which was recognisably type 1 car the Beetle known today. It was one of the first cars designed with the aid of a wind tunnel_a method used for German aircraft design since the early 1920s. The car designs were put through rigorous tests and achieved a record-breaking million miles of testing before being deemed finished.

The car  popularize  as the “Beetle” because of its size and unconventional design as an advantage to the consumer.

Although Volkswagen made many detail changes to the Beetle, at that time the basic rear-engine design and rounded shape remained the same. The company developed other rear-engine models with more-modern styling and improved engineering, but none were as successful as the Beetle. The original Beetle was launched in 1938 and was originally known as simply the Volkswagen. However because of it’s small and circular design it was soon known under a number of nicknames including bug and beetle.

Over the years there were several versions and updates to the Beetle, including a cabriolet version, but it maintained the sense of style and fun that it was known for.

It remained in and out of production for 80 years before stopping in 2018. The Beetle is now an iconic car and has become a cultural icon through the Herbie the love bug films.

VW Golf 1974 to 2023

The Golf has been one of VW’s best-selling models with over 30 million sold since it was first introduced nearly 50 years ago in 1974. It was originally intended as a modern, front-wheel-drive, long-distance replacement for the Beetle.

Over the years there have been several iterations of the Golf including three and five-door hatchbacks, estate, cabriolets and even convertibles.

Now in its eighth generation the VW Golf still offers you a range of economical engines, including a fully electric option, a spacious and safe family car but it now also comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment and navigation centre, Head-Up display which projects key info onto the windscreen and a digital cockpit system.

Just a year after the VW Golf debuted the second of VW’s best-known models hit the roads. The Polo was launched in 1975 and since then it has remained a favourite of drivers around the world.

In the UK the Polo has predominantly been sold as a hatchback, however over the last 45 years around the world it has been sold in saloon and estate body shapes as well.

As you can see from the above pictures today’s Polo has a less boxy shape, a sportier design. On the interior VW have worked to give drivers a more high-tech feel with an eight-inch touchscreen with VW’s ‘App-Connect’ system to integrate your smartphone onto the screen.

Different models launch under base Polo, Polo life, Polo style, Polo R-line and Polo GTi, launch in year 2023.
